Busy Edinburgh street closed off to traffic due to building safety fears

Emergency services are currently in attendance at a flat in Edinburgh city centre, with a road closure also in place.

Edinburgh Police alerted the public to the incident on social media, saying that West Preston Street and Salisbury Place are currently closed due to an unsafe building in Causewayside.

They also advised motorists to avoid the area if possible, saying: "West Preston Street and Salisbury Place Edinburgh are currently closed due to an unsafe building at in Causewayside. Motorists are asked to seek alternative routes."

A picture from the scene shows two fire appliances present at the flat, with the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirming that an unsafe drain pipe has caused crews to attend and make the area safe.

A cordon has also been placed around the scene, preventing vehicles from getting through.

A height appliance can be seen carrying two firefighters up to the third storey of the unsafe building, with a separate fire engine on standby.

Several others firefighters watch on, as well as people passing on the street.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed the reason for attendance was due to an unsafe drain pipe on the side of the building.

A spokesperson said: "We are currently in attendance at an address on Causewayside, Edinburgh, after a drain pipe came loose, and was hanging over the pavement.

"Crews are currently assisting to make the area safe once more, with the call coming in at 12:37 and one appliance, as well as a height appliance being deployed."
