Busy Edinburgh beach attracts huge queues as locals bask in balmy sunshine

One of Edinburgh's most popular destinations was flooded with sun worshippers this afternoon as temperatures within the city reached a summer-like 14 degrees.

Portobello Beach is usually one of the busiest spots during the summer as locals and tourists flock to the sand and walk down the promenade to catch a bite to eat.

The arcade at the start of the stretch is also a major hotspot for locals, but you don't often expect it to be rammed before the start of April.

Well, thanks to the spring sunshine giving Edinburgh residents something to smile about, Wednesday was one of the warmest days of the year so far, meaning in typical fashion, the beach and promenade was a sea of locals.

Although it may still be a tad nippy for most, it didn't stop people stopping for a quick paddle and setting up with their beach towels and picnic rugs on the golden sand this afternoon.

As well as the beach being busier than usual, the promenade was also attracting a lot of people hungry to try the beach-side cafe's and restaurants.

The addition of Civerinos Pizza at Portobello has certainly attracted more hungry customers, with the company opting for a very shrewd location to offer their signature pizza slices and fries in a cone.

With the weather set to take a drastic turn for the worse next week with rain and chilly temperatures forecast, this presented the prime opportunity for Edinburgh locals to get out and savour the brief spell of heat.

Most were pictured not taking any chances with the weather and dressing up in typical spring attire, however. As well as the odd few going all out and getting their swimwear on, the majority opted for a more cautious approach, with many seen wearing jackets or sweatshirts, despite the 14-degree heat.

The row of seaside tables and chairs were also claimed by those making the trip to Portobello, which always proves to be a popular spot during the summer months for a cheeky drink or two.

The blissful heat is set to continue for the rest of the week, albeit with some cloudy spells included. Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday should all see temperatures exceeding the 13-degree mark, with mostly sunny spells before the typical Scottish weather returns the following week.
