Busy East Lothian carriageway closed in both directions after smash during early hours

A busy dual carriageway on the outskirts of Edinburgh has been shut down in both directions following a "serious" collision during the early hours of Monday morning.

The A1 near Dunbar is currently closed due to the accident, with emergency services in attendance and several diversions in place.

Commuters travelling between East Lothian and Edinburgh are facing delays to their morning route due to the smash, which took place around 3am on April 24.

Traffic Scotland have alerted motorists of delays in the area ahead of the morning rush hour. They said: "Thistly cross to Spot Roundabout is closed in both directions due to a road traffic incident. Emergency services at scene and road operating company on route."

It is currently unclear how many vehicles were involved in the accident or if there were any injuries. It is understood that crash investigation work is now underway on the busy dual carriageway.

Traffic is temporarily being diverted through Dunbar.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Around 2.55 am on Monday, 24 April 2023, police were called to a serious road traffic collision on the A1, between the Thistly Cross and Spott Roundabouts, near Dunbar.

"Emergency services remain at the scene and enquiries are continuing. The road is closed in both directions with local diversions in place."
