Businessman who had to shut bar over forgotten planning rule rejects £1.3m bid

A hotel which had to shut its bar because of a decades-old planning rule is now up for sale. Owner Jason Hamer has rejected a bid of £1.34m for the CFeleven bed and breakfast in Cardiff.

Six years ago Mr Hamer opened an upmarket gin bar on the ground floor of the Cathedral Road site after it had been running for around 40 years as just a B&B. He secured an alcohol licence and the bar became popular – but it had to shut down in January after a Cardiff council officer reportedly trawled decades of archives and found the B&B was originally approved on the basis that its bar would only be open to "residents of the hotel". You can read more about that saga here.

Mr Hamer, who at the time said the "ridiculous" situation had cost five staff their jobs, closed the bar but has continued running the site as a B&B. Last month the property, which has 10 bedrooms, went up for auction with a guide price of £1.25m. Six offers were placed in a bidding war but the final bid of £1.34m was rejected.
