Business owners blast bikers causing chaos on Craigneuk pavements

A Wishaw woman has blasted bikers who are causing chaos on a tight pavement near her business.

Trudy Grigor and other business owners in Craigneuk’s Shieldmuir Street have been left frustrated with those on bikes flying past.

Trudy was left injured following an accident with a cyclist last year and is amazed that even more accidents have not occurred.

She said: “The pavement outside is very narrow . We have a problem with bike users racing down the hill.

“Last year one actually hit me when I walked out my shop.

“All the shop owners have stopped various cyclists and asked them to go across the road or on the road as its very dangerous.

“Someone could end up seriously injured or worse.

“One of them has an electric bike which could easily kill a child .”

Trudy admits she is fearful of a more serious accident taking place unless action is taken.

She has spoken to councillors in the past but wants people to be responsible for their own actions.

She added: “I’ve spoken to one of our local councillors but ultimately it’s the responsibility of the cyclists themselves.

“I just want to make people aware in case they are down here.

“It’s not kids that are racing down here - it’s the adults that are the problem.

“After my accident a pregnant woman was coming out of a shop and she was nearly hit by a cyclist; she got the fright of her life.

“It’s got to stop and it’s got to stop now.”

Craigneuk councillor Kenneth Duffy has been contacted about the problem.

He said “It’s unnecessary and dangerous.

"These businesses have suffered more than most during the pandemic, they don’t need people afraid to use them due to a reckless few.”
