Evariste Ndayishimiye, the new president, is keen to break with the isolation enforced by his late predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza, whose controversial third term sparked a political crisis and deadly crackdown in 2015. Despite being the poorest country in the world, Burundi is striving to reclaim its former glory. Young entrepreneurs are driving tourism and business, while international partners are returning.
