Burst sewer pipe shuts down major Ayr road as water engineers race to urgent repair

A burst sewer pipe has shutdown a major Ayr road this afternoon.

The pipework at Ayr harbour has become dislodged sparking an urgent response.

Scottish Water engineers have raced to the site at South Harbour Street.

South Harbour Street has been closed between Fort Street and New Bridge Street to allow workers access.

The pipework which runs along the River Ayr has collapsed into the water.

The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency have also been informed of the live incident.

Engineers are set to work through the night to fix the pipe, with the sewer only accessible during low tidal times.

Scottish Water chiefs say they will deploy over-pumping at the next low tide to minimise any environmental impact before starting repair works.

A spokesperson for Scottish Water said: "We are currently carrying out emergency works after a section of sewer pipework became dislodged at Ayr Harbour.

"We will be installing over-pumping at the next low tide to minimise any environmental impact before starting the repair of the damaged section.

"The sewer is only accessible during low tidal times and our teams will be working throughout tonight at these intervals to progress the urgent work.

"The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has been informed and we will continue to liaise with them.

"It will be necessary to close South Harbour Street from the bottom of Fort Street to New Bridge Street, in order to carry out the work safely."

"All traffic management will be agreed with South Ayrshire Council and we will work with people affected by the closure to minimise any disruption or inconvenience where possible.

"We would like to thank them for their patience and understanding."
