Burnley 2-5 Tottenham: Heung-min Son hits a hat-trick in ruthless win

Tottenham produced their best performance of the season with a 5-2 thumping of Burnley, as Heung-min Son scored a hat-trick.

It was the perfect response from Ange Postecoglou and his team after their midweek Carabao Cup exit to Fulham and the truest example yet of the manager’s tactical setup.

Spurs got off to the worst possible start after just four minutes. A slick Burnley passing move saw Luca Koleosho hold off Pedro Porro and pull the ball back for Lyle Foster, who sidefooted the ball home.

The Clarets looked full of confidence and had chances to extend their lead before Spurs hit back. A simple ball over the top from Porro found Son, who exchanged passes with Manor Solomon before clipping the ball over Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford.

Spurs largely dominated possession for the remainder of the half, but were guilty of being wasteful in front goal until stoppage time when Cristian Romero thumped home from 25 yards after Burnley failed to deal with a corner.

Vincent Kompany made a double change at the break to move to a back five, and it played completely into Spurs hands, who often found themselves in acres of space or able to breach the backline with a simple ball. Once Maddison had curled home a third, the floodgates opened and Son completed his hat-trick with a quick-fire double.

Josh Brownhill added a late consolation but it did little to dampen the mood in the away end.
