A local camera crew captured the moment a ballot drop box in Washington was set on fire, potentially destroying hundreds of ballots just days before the election.
Firefighters responded to the scene Monday around 4 a.m., arriving to smoke and flames billowing out of a ballot box at Fisher's Landing Transit Center in Vancouver, Washington.
Footage of officials tossing a pile of burning ballots on the ground was captured by KATU just a few hours after the incident began.
'We don't know how many ballots were in this box, but obviously they are destroyed," a KATU news anchor reported on air.
When responders arrived at the scene they discovered a ballot box in flames, which investigators confirmed contained hundreds of ballots prior to the fire. Only a few were reportedly salvageable.
"Officers arrived and located a suspicious device next to the box. The ballot box was smoking and was on fire. Members of the Metro Explosive Disposal Unit (MEDU) arrived and safely collected the device, and the fire was extinguished," Vancouver Police wrote in a statement.
The FBI, federal, state, and local law enforcements are working together to investigate the matter further.
