Newcastle were rocked by a late Liverpool winner at Anfield despite debutant Alexander Isak's goal.. United fans had their first glimpse of Isak when the Swedish forward cut inside before shooting over, while Ryan Fraser also sent an effort over the crossbar following a good move from Eddie Howe's side.
Dan Burn then had to be alert to stop Dias in full flow while Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett both cut out good opportunities for Liverpool, with United looking to hit the hosts on the break.
Trippier tested Alisson with a fierce free-kick after Fabinho fouled Joe Willock, but the Brazilian was firmly behind his shot. Liverpool then had a big chance when Firmino played in Dias, but the striker fired over after Nick Pope forced him wide.

However Newcastle rocked Anfield when they capitalised on a poor Alexander-Arnold pass to launch a counter-attack which ended with Sean Longstaff playing in Isak who fired home on his debut.
Isak thought he had double United's lead after rounding two defenders to score, but the offside flag curbed the celebrations. And then Liverpool equalised when Firmino ended a flowing move, giving Pope no chance.
Newcastle were dealt a cruel late blow when Carvalho turned the ball home after a goalmouth scramble to give the home side the win.
Here's how Lee Ryder rated the Newcastle United players.
Nick Pope 7
Had barely anything to do in the first half. The beaten twice after the break but made some stunning saves.
Kieran Trippier 7
Another solid display from the England man.
Jamaal Lascelles 6
Took an early blow but was pushed to the limit by Liverpool.
Dan Burn 8
A phenomenal display and didn't deserve to be on losing side as he swept and headed clear all night.
Matt Targett 7
Proved to be an outlet going forward.
Sean Longstaff 7
A neat assist for Isak. Did well defensively for the mostpart.
Joe Willock 7
Can't be faulted as he tackled and battled all evening.
Joelinton 8
Consistently brilliant in the middle against Fabinho.
Ryan Fraser 7
Gave it a real go. Unlucky with shot on the turn in the first half. Had 27 touches in all.
Miguel Almiron 7
Had some nice moments but still needs to improve final product.
Alexander Isak 8
Made a major impact on his debut and had Liverpool riled. Superbly taken maiden goal for United and was harshly called offside for a second. Showed a great physical presence too.
Subs
Jacob Murphy 6 (for Fraser 63)
Final touch let him down.
Chris Wood 6 (for Isak 63)
Was a hard act to follow coming on for Isak
Elliot Anderson (for Almiron 82)
*Subs must play 15 minutes to get a mark
