Burglar with long criminal record back in jail after police hunt

A convicted burglar has been jailed after a police hunt.

Merseyside police appealed for help finding Robert McCarten as he was wanted on recall to prison for drug offences. The 50-year-old is now back behind bars after previously serving time for attempting an armed robbery at a newsagents, on Breck Road in Anfield in 2017.

At the time, McCarten was on bail and due for sentencing just two days later after stealing from a supermarket. His criminal record, which dates back to 1988, includes 27 thefts and multiple burglaries, throughout the 1990s and 2000s.

One of his crimes included using an angle grinder and drill to steal a £2,000 projector screen from a city centre restaurant in 2014. He and an accomplice were spared jail after breaking in to the former Tribeca bar and pizzeria on Berry Street.

McCarten kept lookout while his accomplice, Robert Comish, cut through concrete breeze blocks. He later said he had been drinking since teatime, took prescription drugs “to get smashed” and had no recollection of the raid.

The crook, of Suffolk Street, Liverpool city centre, received a 12-month sentence, suspended for 18 months, which was later activated after a breach. At the time of these latest offences he was subject to a community order and yet another suspended sentence.
