The co-owner of a successful Wirral takeaway says the business has found the perfect shop to expand after an agonising wait.
Burger Joe opened in Moreton in 2018 and was soon praised by locals as a “tastier, cheaper, independent Five Guys”. The only issue was its singular location, which could be difficult for those further south in Wirral to get to.
Kellie Wilson, a photographer, oversees the brand's visuals, including branding and the shop’s design, while her husband Lloyd is the head chef. The business is named after their son Joe.

Kellie, who lives in Hoylake, said: “We’ve looked at so many places in the Bromborough and Bebington area. We get messages constantly from people who live a bit too far away from Moreton.”
The pair have expanded to previous locations before, such as a more sit-down restaurant style venue in New Brighton. However, during tough conditions in the pandemic, they decided to focus on making their sites takeaway only and finding the right place for that.
Thankfully, a few weeks ago they finally found a suitable venue on Allport Road in Bromborough Village after a long wait. Kellie said: “We’ve been looking for a shop in Bromborough for about three years, so we were delighted to find the right place in the right spot. We stumbled across it and thought this is perfect. It’s all worked out brilliantly.”
Burger Joe’s contains a wide range of unique burgers, from the Katsu Chicken to the Salt and Pepper Halloumi. The idea originated from a trip to London by Kellie and Lloyd where they were “blown away” by the quality of the capital’s takeaway.
Setting high standards for themselves, the pair have committed to use local businesses for their meat and vegetables. Kellie added: “Where possible, we use local suppliers, such as butchers and greengrocers. It’s never been more important to support small businesses with the price hikes in everything - utilities and rent are super high right now.”
Lloyd has worked in Liverpool's hospitality venues for several years, and now Kellie feels that they have a "good formula" with Burger Joe. She said the business remains committed to its slogan of ‘proper fresh burgers’. She said: “It isn’t frozen stuff, we have a kitchen with experienced chefs who cook it. We handroll the burgers ourselves.”
Burger Joe’s Bromborough site on Allport Road will open next month. Its Moreton takeaway is located on 15 Upton Road.
