Burger King offers freebies to mark National Burger Day with invitation to swap the meat

Free burgers are up for grabs this Thursday and in welcome news for vegans they will be meat-free options aimed at planting new ideas in burger fans' heads.

August 25 is National Burger Day and to mark the occasion Burger King will be giving away 10,000 treats nationwide. But in a twist, the free burgers will be plant-based and vegan, with the company hoping that its 'cheat on meat' offer will persuade fans to try a change from their usual snack.

It is inviting burger lovers to swap their regular Whopper for either a plant-based Whopper or a Vegan Royale by taking up a freebie that will save them £5.49 on the price. All people need to do to be in with a chance of claiming one is to make a click-and-collect order on the Burger King app.

The company says it came up with the idea for the offer following research which revealed that two in three meat-eaters - 66% - would be reluctant to try a plant-based or vegan burger. And a remarkable one in two, 51%, said they would not try a plant-based burger even if it was free.

So to test the mood and to encourage people to be a bit more open in their tastes, it is promoting its one-day-only deal with an image of the burger available which is set to tempt the tastebuds. Burger King says its meat-free items taste as good and its Plant-Based Whopper differs from the vegan option as it is flame-grillled on the same equipment as its original Whopper.

The new 'Whopper Swapper' offer is in keeping with the company's plans to go 50% meat-free by 2030. It has already launched its first completely meat-free restaurant, with a pilot takeover at its Leicester Square branch earlier this year.

Those wanting to take advantage of the giveaway will need to be quick off the mark on Thursday as the burger deal is first-come, first served. Customers can download the Burger King app via Google Play here or the App Store here . For all restaurants across the country which are participating in the deal see here.
