Bulls ‘biggest fear’ is failing to address need at point guard

This offseason will be extremely important for the Chicago Bulls, regardless of the direction they choose to take. Arturas Karnisovas supposedly wants to run back the same group, and while that could lead to more middling results, it’s ultimately the team’s decision.

That being said, if they do choose to push for the playoffs, they need to address the roster’s needs. Chicago needs forward depth, three-point shooting, and more youth. However, none of those compare to their need at the point guard position, which Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz believes to be their biggest need heading into a summer of potential chaos.

Swartz wrote an article for Bleacher Report detailing each NBA team’s “biggest fear,” and for Chicago, he said it is not addressing their need at the one.

“The Bulls offense ranked just 24th overall this season despite possessing a roster with DeMar DeRozan, Zach LaVine and Nikola Vučević,” Swartz wrote. “Part of this was due to a weakness at point guard, as Lonzo Ball missed the entire season following knee surgery.

With Ball likely out for the entire 2023-24 campaign as well, the Bulls need to find a point guard to take his place, one that can elevate the roster around him and get Chicago back to the playoffs.”

He mentioned a few high-profile ideas but stressed that, regardless of the direction they choose, they need to add talent at the point guard spot.

“Signing a big free agent like James Harden, Kyrie Irving or Fred VanVleet is out, as the Bulls will only have the non-taxpayer mid-level exception of $12.2 million to spend,” Swartz wrote. “This puts them more in the market for a player like D’Angelo Russell, Russell Westbrook, Gabe Vincent or Dennis Schröder.

A trade is also a possibility, as Chicago needs to keep a close eye on any disgruntled floor generals that may become available.”

If the Bulls don’t add point guard help this summer, it will be a complete disaster.
