Shaker believers in Mercer County began dismantling a frame house on December 16, 1816, to build a new dwelling about a mile northeast of their village centre. The move was deliberate. The Shaker community was growing, and they needed a proper place for new converts to live and learn about Shaker life. The new building welcomed seekers, those who were curious about the doctrines of Mother Ann Lee, the founder of the community. For over a century, the North Lot Family Dwelling served as a place where people decided whether to join the community.
