A national homebuilder firm is helping children in South Lanarkshire travel to and from school safely by donating high-vis vests to children living within and close to their developments.
To highlight Walk to School month, leading homebuilder Miller Homes is handing out the vests to youngsters in Hamilton's Highstonehall and Highstonehall Park, Newton Fields in Cambuslang and Jackton Gardens in East Kilbride, as part of its Home Safe initiative.
After a successful two years in Scotland, Miller Homes has expanded its ‘home safe’ campaign across the UK for its third year meaning children’s high-vis vests will be available to collect from the sales centre at Miller Homes’ three South Lanarkshire developments.
As the morning and afternoon walks to and from school get a little darker, it’s hoped the bright yellow vests will ensure local children are visible to drivers whether they are walking, cycling or scooting to school.
Councillor Robert Brown, chairman of the council’s community and enterprise resources committee, said: “The safety of our children is paramount, so we have put in place a wide range of services and initiatives to address road safety.
“I am therefore very pleased that Miller Homes Scotland’s ongoing ‘home safe’ campaign is back again this year, not only donating high vis vests but encouraging children and their families to be safe as the nights start to get darker.”
Louise Caldwell from Miller Homes West told Lanarkshire Live : “Getting to and from school is such an important part of a child’s daily routine and being active while doing it is great for their mental and physical wellbeing.
"Our ‘home safe’ initiative is designed to help children to be as safe as possible on those journeys, educating them on the importance of being visible to other road users, which will instil good safety habits for years to come.”
Suitable for all primary school children, the high-vis vests will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and can be collected from the sales centre from Thursday to Monday 10.30am to 5.30pm.
