Building could be demolished to make way for shopping parade

A new shopping area is set to be created in Horwich if plans to demolish a building are agreed. Plans lodged with Bolton Council request the demolition of the current Something Different glassware, engraving and trophy shop on Chorley New Road to be replaced with four commercial units.

The current shop is attached to Enterprise House, the main body of which will not be affected by the plans. The single storey retail unit was a later addition to Enterprise House, erected at some time in the 1970s.

The site is within the Horwich Loco Works conservation area and the loco works bath house once stood on the application area. In supporting documents, the applicant said: “This planning application seeks to erect a single storey commercial building split into four separate retail units each measuring 60 square metres internal floor area with traditional shop fronts.

“This will follow on from the demolition of the existing small retail unit currently sat on the application site. The site is classed as brownfield land and is located within the urban area.

“The building will be constructed of traditional masonry walls and slate roof matching Enterprise House to the rear.”

The plans said the commercial units will be self-contained with access via front doors on Chorley New Road.

The applicant said there will be some off street parking to the rear from Brunel Street with street parking on Gooch Street to the side of the building. The design and access statement, added: “In summary, this development proposal provides an opportunity to re-use a piece of brownfield land within the urban to provide employment purposes.

“All matters of planning policies are met and we feel that this application could be supported by the local authority.”
