Members of a Lexington Council committee have received an update on code enforcement operations. The presentation came last week from Code Enforcement Director Alex Olszowy. After detailing all the responsibilities of his office, Olszowy was asked about graffiti issues. He said at a certain point, it becomes a criminal case. Social Services and Public Safety Committee Chair Jennifer Reynolds said the matter deserves more attention.
“Cause I’ve dealt with it on signs, on fences, on all sorts of different things. And so, I think that is something that we need to firm up of who’s going to clean it up and who’s in charge of enforcing it,” said Olszowy.
In the nuisance area, Olszowy said the primary complaints remain consistent. Those are issues like tall grass, trash, and sidewalk obstacles.
The number of citations issued by Lexington’s Code Enforcement Division has declined substantially in recent years.
“The citations dropped only about 500 but the appeals dropped almost seven percent,” said Olszowy.
Olszowy said that indicates his staff is handling the code enforcement business without having to go through the appeals process. He noted that helps speed up the needed corrections and get the cases off the books.
