A coroner will examine the death of a builder outside a Derby police station has opened, with an inquest opening hearing that his cause of death was a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
The IOPC has previously confirmed that construction worker Marius Ciolac, 35, suffered a single bullet wound to the abdomen after being shot by an armed police officer outside Ascot Road police station on Friday, October 7. He was taken to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham but was later pronounced dead, reports Derbyshire Live.
A Taser, baton round and a stun grenade were used in an attempt to stop Mr Ciolac who was, according to Derbyshire Police, wielding a knife and damaging property.

During an inquest hearing (Monday, November 7) at Derby Coroner's Court, presided over by assistant coroner, Sabyta Kaushal, it was revealed that investigators have spoken to about 25 witnesses regarding the incident, consisting of 11 police personnel and up to 14 members of the public identified during an Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) inquiry.
The hearing also consisted of a statement of identification and the announcement of his cause of death as a single shot to the abdomen following a post-mortem at Leicester Royal Infirmary, pending further inquiries by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).
Ms Kaushal outlined how Mr Ciolac’s brother, Alin Ciolac, had travelled to England from his home in Cernavoda, Romania, to identify his brother’s body at Leicester Royal Infirmary on October 16. He was present - together with an interpreter - during the proceedings from Romania via Microsoft Teams.
Mr Ciolac’s personal details were also read out, such as his date of birth, before the inquest was adjourned whilst further investigation work was completed by the IOPC. It will resume at a later date which has not yet been determined.
A coroner’s officer told Derbyshire Live that Mr Ciolac’s death was reported to the coroner on October 10 by police after his death three days earlier. They added that the IOPC “has been very supportive” and that the inquest remains open and adjourned whilst further inquiries continue.
