'Brutal' president claims he's nothing like Putin because he 'only kills criminals'

The President of the Philippines says he is nothing like dictator Vladimir Putin - because he only kills criminals, not children or old people.

Rodrigo Duterte made the eye-opening comments after being compared to the Russian warmonger.

Earlier this month, the outgoing populist leader said that he plans to kill between three and five more drugs lords before stepping down from office.

The 77-year-old led a bloody campaign against the trade during his six years in power, vowing to "finish" a few more criminals before his retirement.

Mr Duterte previously called Putin an idol and a friend - but dismissed comparisons with the Kremlin ruler, whose deadly invasion of Ukraine has now moved into a fourth month.

Making the startling boast during a live cabinet meeting Tuesday, the president says it is not right to say both he and Putin, 69, are like-for-like leaders.

“Many say that Putin and I are both killers,” Duterte said.

“I’ve long told you Filipinos that I really kill. But I kill criminals, I don’t kill children and the elderly. We’re in two different worlds.”

He says his war is on drugs will continue until the day he departs and has made clear that anyone who falls foul of the laws will be punished.

Mr Duterte, who will step down on June 30 when his turbulent six-year premiership ends, vowed to put to death more drugs criminals before he goes, Newsweek reported.

In a taped address to the nation, he said: "Before I leave, let's finish three or five drug lords. I want to kill them. I do not want them alive.

"I would tell my co-workers in government, we have to gamble. We have to fight them, and when we fight - just kill them."

Duterte had already threatened that those who do not have the Covid jab could be injected with Ivermectin, an anti-parasite drug widely used to treat animals.

The warning came after he last year told those who break quarantine rules they would be "shot".

He said last year: "You choose, vaccine or I will have you jailed."

He continued: "For as long as you are here and you are a human being, and can carry the virus, get vaccinated.

"Otherwise, I will order all the village captains to have a tally of the people who refuse to be vaccinated.

"Because if not, I will have Ivermectin meant for pigs injected into you."

In 2020, in a televised speech Duterte also urged the military to open fire on anyone who "causes trouble" during the country's lockdown.
