The latest Brazilian the Spanish champions are after is Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United. So are Chelsea. The Blues have expressed an interest in the 24-year-old Magpies midfielder, according to the Evening Standard.
football.london has been told Chelsea officials have been looking at midfield targets over the past couple of months with the club hoping to make reinforcements either in January or next summer. January tends to be a quieter window, with clubs unwilling to sell their prized assets and that may be the case with Newcastle and Guimaraes.
The former Lyon midfielder made the move to St. James' Park in the January transfer window, despite heavy links to Arsenal. Since then, Guimaraes has featured 26 times in the Premier League and has scored six goals in the process. The Brazilian is set to represent his country at next month's FIFA World Cup where he may attract even more suitors depending on his performances on football's biggest stage.
However, when being interviewed on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football recently, Guimaraes was speaking about his future. He insisted he was happy with how things are going at Newcastle and revealed that he wants to become a club legend one day.
"For sure, it's always a pleasure to hear things like that," the midfielder said after being praised by Jamie Carragher and Roy Keane. "It is one more motivation, but this is only my first full season at Newcastle.
"There is a long way to go. I love playing here, I love to bond with the fans, and I want to become a legend here."
Chelsea are on the search for new midfielders with the future of a couple of their players uncertain. The Blues risk losing both Jorginho and N'Golo Kante at the end of the season, with their contracts due to expire at Stamford Bridge.
The club are in talks with Jorginho and his entourage over extending his deal and have also held negotiations with Kante. As time goes on, however, it's looking increasingly likely that at least one of them will go on a free transfer.
football.london understands Declan Rice remains a key target for Chelsea, who have been considering making a move for the West Ham United midfielder next summer. By the time the season ends, Rice will have 12 months left on his contract and the Hammers may then be more open to selling their star player.
The 23-year-old, who was released by Chelsea as a teenager, is reluctant to sign an extension on his contract at the London Stadium and the Blues are looking to take advantage of the situation. Ajax's Edson Alvarez remains a target for Chelsea after the club missed out on the Mexican in the summer transfer window.
