Bruno Guimaraes pinpoints main reason why he joined Newcastle United over Arsenal

Bruno Guimaraes has revealed the main reason why he joined Newcastle United after reported interest from Arsenal.

The Gunners were interested in bringing a new midfielder to the club last month, but were unable to get any deals over the line after missing out on the likes of Guimaraes, as well as Arthur Melo.

Instead, Guimaraes completed a £43million move to Newcastle, who have recently become one of the wealthiest football clubs in the world following a takeover from Saudi-based owners, Public Investment Fund, who have an 80% stake in the Tyneside outfit.

Guimaraes became the Magpies' record signing following his move from Lyon and their new midfielder believes the club can become a "big power" in world football in the future.

Speaking on his move to St. James' Park, the Brazil international said: "We are definitely going to be a club that is going to be a big power in world football.

"This is a historic club with a great tradition and a beautiful history. I have no doubts about my decision to come to Newcastle.

"They (Newcastle's owners) were very up front and honest about it. They did not disguise that the main objective and challenge was remaining in the Premier League this season.

"But in the seasons coming, the objective is to be in the Champions League and eventually to win the Champions League. I believe in the project, I believe in everything they spoke to me about, and I am really happy to be a part of this project."

Guimaraes also spoke about how he had spoken to some of his Brazilian compatriots, Thiago Silva, Alex Telles and Gabriel Jesus, before moving to Newcastle.

He said: "They told me how difficult it is to play away at Newcastle given how passionate the fans are, that it's one of the most difficult away fixtures in the league, so I did not have to think twice about coming here.

"I am really happy to be here and really looking forward to experiencing the atmosphere of the Premier League and Newcastle."
