Bruno Guimaraes has admitted he struggles to understand Newcastle United supporters because of their “heavy” local dialect. Fans have been stunned by the Brazilian’s efforts both on and off the pitch since his big-money move in January.
Unable to speak a word of English on arrival, the 24-year-old continues to take lessons and updates supporters of his progress on social media. Astonishingly, after less than three months on Tyneside, Guimaraes conducted a post-match interview following his last-gasp winner against Leicester City.
The midfielder has endeared himself to Toon supporters for his on-field displays, too. Another goal in the 4-1 win over Southampton on Sunday - a superb strike from 25 yards out - is the latest moment in an ever-growing highlight reel.

Speaking to Brazilian YouTube channel 3 na Area, Guimaraes confessed he is realising his lifelong dream by playing in the Premier League. However, one caveat is his inability to communicate with supporters… and the North East weather!
“It’s difficult (to understand supporters),” Guimaraes said. “Even more so in the north of England. It’s a Geordie accent or something. Wow, it’s very heavy. They come and talk to me on the street. Guys have three eggs in their mouths (and still) talk to you. I don’t understand anything (laughs).
“But it’s been really cool to play in the Premier League, it’s always been my dream and (we are) playing well, in the top four in the Premier League now. So it’s something that has been, for me, without a doubt, one of the best years of my career.
“It’s been wonderful. Sometimes, I even joked in another interview, I look like the mayor of the city. Where I go, the crowd screams ‘Bruno, Bruno’, I can’t do anything at all, the guys here are crazy for me.
“It’s a huge affection. I’ve been enjoying the city quite a bit, despite being so damn cold. I think that’s the only problem. Man, I think this affectionate relationship with the fans is unique to me.”
