Bruno Guimaraes nets outstanding goal on his first Newcastle United start

Bruno Guimaraes has proven to be worth the wait after marking his first start for Newcastle United with an outrageous goal. The midfielder scored a instinctive backheel volley to put Eddie Howe's side in front against Southampton.

Guimaraes had been forced to settle for late cameo appearances since his January arrival from Lyon, but had impressed supporters in these short showings with his confidence in possession and flair. However, the 24-year-old was named from the start on Thursday night following a minor injury to Brazilian compatriot Joelinton.

Stuart Armstrong headed Southampton in front, but the visitors drew level seven minutes later as Chris Wood opened his account for the Magpies. Jonjo Shelvey delivered a fine cross from deep which found the ex-Burnley striker unmarked in the box, and he guided the header into the far corner.

The sides went into the break level, but seven minutes after the restart a piece of magic from Guimaraes gave the Magpies the lead. January signings Dan Burn and Matt Targett were both involved in the goal, with the centre-back nodding the loanee's corner back into the danger area.

With little time to react, Guimaraes twisted and his backheel volley was lifted over Forster and into the net. The midfielder was withdrawn in the 67th minute with a suspected injury, with Sean Longstaff coming on as his replacement.

At the time of writing, Howe's side hold a 2-1 lead at St Mary's. Here is how Newcastle United fans reacted to Guimaraes' stunner on his first black-and-white start.

'Best Bruno in the league'

'Goal of the season'

'In a word'

'Just like watching Brazil'

'Love this dude already'

'Money well spent'

'That is filthy'
