Bruno Guimaraes mocks Arsenal over transfer pursuit after sealing Newcastle deal

Bruno Guimaraes made time to poke fun at Arsenal after completing his January transfer switch to Newcastle United.

Guimaraes had been heavily linked with the Gunners for much of the month, only to see Newcastle swoop in and agree a £33million move.

The Brazilian is the first major coup for the club’s new Saudi Arabian owners, having already signed Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.

And a move for the 24-year-old looked unlikely in the face of interest from Champions League-chasing Arsenal.

However, with Arsenal technical director ultimately balking at Lyon’s demands, Newcastle had no such issues and have now landed the midfielder.

Guimaraes signed a four-and-a-half year deal on Sunday and took to social media shortly after with a video which referenced Arsenal’s failed pursuit.

The video, which has already been viewed more than a million times has a number of newspaper headlines alluding to Arsenal leading the race, before several images of his new club.

Speaking after signing Guimaraes, Eddie Howe said: "Bruno is a hugely exciting talent and has been one of our primary targets so I'm delighted to secure him. He strengthens the group immediately ready for the challenge ahead.

"He has been one of the standout performers in France and is a full international for Brazil so I have no doubt our supporters will really enjoy watching him.

“We look forward to welcoming him to the club on his return from international duty."

After making 71 appearances for Lyon in two-and-a-half seasons, the French club sent a message of support to the player following his exit.

They tweeted: “Thank you for your class, your kindness and your professionalism Bruno Guimaraes.

“We wish you a very good continuation with Newcastle United and with the Brazilian national team.

“Olympique Lyonnais will not forget you!”

Newcastle’s newest recruit is currently away with Brazil, where he will play Paraguay on Wednesday night, before arriving in the north east of England in midweek.

Deadline day promises to be an intriguing day for Newcastle, with Howe keen to bring in extra reinforcements in their battle against the drop.

A £12.5m deal for Brighton defender Dan Burn has been agreed ahead of his medical, while reports have also linked them with Manchester United duo Dean Henderson and Jesse Lingard.

Arsenal meanwhile have endured a hugely frustrating month, failing in their bid to sign Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina and Arthur Melo from Juventus.

Pierre-Emerick Aubaemyang could yet complete his exit from the club, with the ostracised former skipper a target for Barcelona, according to reports in Spain.
