Bruno Guimaraes is a 'big character who steps up' - now let's be greedy and hope for more

It was like a drop of ice cold water on a parched tongue. So welcoming and refreshing.

After a seemingly endless wait as the January transfer window moved ominously towards its closure came the news all Geordies had been waiting for with growing concern.

Newcastle United's new owners had made their third breakthrough to bolster see-saw hopes of Premiership survival.

A fair whack of Saudi oil wealth - £33.3m which can just about reach Joelinton's club record £40m fee with £6.5m add-ons - has been spent on another Brazilian, midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

Woah, glory be. Thank goodness.

From Mirandinha who in 1987 became the first Brazilian to play in the Football League during their 100-year history through to Big Joe and now Guimaraes the Boys From Brazil have found their way to Geordieland.

It was quite a cosmopolitan transaction even in what is now a shrinking world - a player from a French club signing for an English one with the purchaser's hierarchy holed up in Saudi Arabia and the player in Brazil which meant the great divide had to be straddled. Newcastle Head of Recruitment Steve Nickson has been a huge admirer for many a day and was appropriately dispatched from headquarters to the other side of the planet.

Apart from the honey coated dialogue of United's new directors about the long term future there were others on hand to boost our Bruno - Brazil's current national squad includes no fewer than 10 players from the Premier League who will of course have been consulted in the build up days.

When you enter the last knockings of a tumultuous month minds become much more concentrated on what can and cannot be done and while Bruno was relaxing in Brazil, job done, United's third effort to land giant Geordie centre back Dan Burn hit breakthrough. Good, for me we need a centre-half big time. Now let us be really greedy and hope for a final flourish before Monday 11pm.

I've just recorded The Brazilian Shirt Name Podcast which is hosted by Tim Vickery in Rio and and Dotun Adebayo over here and Tim got talking off camera about Guimaraes.

Tim is the South American football correspondent for the likes of Sky Television and Five Live and as such has seen a lot of our new expensive import.

Reassuringly he told me: "There are many more plusses than minuses with him.

"First point, Guimaraes is a big character. He's one of those people that if you’re in trouble at the wrong end of the table, and you look round the dressing room before the game and you've got him with you it's good news.

"He is a big character who steps up. He's not afraid and that's one thing Newcastle need. He's also very versatile, got a good engine, and is very, very competitive.

"He's developing, he's ambitious, he's intelligent, and I think he has a lot to offer."

At 24 Bruno has already broken into Brazil's national squad and is a good age with a long career in front of him.

It's probably just as well that Guimaraes was an unused sub when Brazil drew an explosive World Cup qualifier with Ecuador 1-1 in Quito on Thursday gone given that there were two actual red cards, two rescinded red cards for Liverpool keeper Alisson after VAR intervention, two spot kick awards also overturned by VAR, and a goal disallowed. It was best our new man was kept away from such mayhem raising everyone's temperature.

Guimaraes will remain with Brazil for their match against Paraguay in the early hours of Wednesday morning before reporting to Tyneside but that is okay. He can come back with Miggy Almiron!

Newcastle don't play again until Everton rock up on Tuesday of next week.

Incidentally Tim Vickery's show is a fascinating mixture of football, culture and music each episode lasting an hour and a half.

It focussed on the day Newcastle last won a major trophy, the European Fairs Cup of 69, and was done in the belief that the Magpies will become a force once again following new ownership.

I found it a joy to reminisce telling a few tales, talking Rod Stewart and the Animals, and beating the Geordie gong. It will be online come Friday.
