Bruno Guimaraes crowned Fans' Footballer of the Year as he beats Salah and Haaland to award

Bruno Guimaraes has been crowned Reach PLC's Fans' Footballer of the Year after seeing off some world class opposition to scoop the prestigious prize. The Brazil international also won the Chronicle's player of the year award to end two consecutive seasons of glory for Allan Saint-Maximin.

Bruno beat off competition from Miguel Almiron, Joelinton and Kieran Trippier to win at a canter. But he also won the national award - as voted for by fans of rival clubs around the country - to see off reigning champion Mohamed Salah and England and Arsenal star Beth Mead.

Guimaraes has been nothing short of a revelation since arriving from Lyon in January for £40million last January. The Brazilian received 8853 votes nationally to win the award and not only denied Salah a hat-trick after two wins in 2020 and 2021, but also beat Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland of Man City, Tottenham's Harry Kane and Heung-min Son and Leicester winger James Maddison.

In terms of the Newcastle vote, Bruno's victory was never in doubt as he scooped 2893 votes from the Geordie faithful. Almiron was in second place with 1301, while Trippier and Joelinton scored 762 and 395 respectively.

Bruno's 2022 is packed with highlights after 31 appearances for Newcastle and eight goals from midfield. Bruno burst on to the scene with a stunning back-heeled volley at Southampton in a 2-1 win on the South Coast in March. That was followed be a brace against Leicester in a 2-1 win to help secure safety.

Bruno also scored against Arsenal and this season his double strike against Brentford in a 5-1 win capped a man of the match display to go with his collection. The United ace also scored again at St Mary's in a 4-1 win this time to leave the Saints deflated.

Journalists nominated players from across the top flight - in both the men’s and women’s game - which was then whittled down to a nine-player shortlist.
