Bruno Guimaraes breaks long-standing Newcastle United record with dramatic header

Bruno Guimaraes broke a long-standing record for Newcastle United when he scored the wining goal against Leicester on Sunday after five minutes of injury time.

The Brazilian midfielder – about whom it had been said is not a goalscorer before he signed in January – picked up a brace against Leicester City. His two goals helped Newcastle United overcome a one-goal deficit and ultimately win the match at St James’ Park.

Newcastle were 1-0 down when Bruno got his first, a scrappy one which he kicked from between the legs of Leicester City’s goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. The referee had a good look to make sure no foul had been committed and he decided it should stand.

The match then looked like tailing off as a 1-1 draw, before Joe Willock came on and flew down the wing before crossing it into the Leicester City box after five minutes of injury time. Despite having played the full game, Bruno had the energy to run into the box and score his first ever headed goal – a belter one at that.

Sports analytics company Opta then revealed that the goal was Newcastle’s latest Premier League winning goal since they started recording the statistic in 2006. The company tweeted: "94:10 - Bruno Guimarães' second and winning goal scored after 94 minutes and 10 seconds is @NUFC 's latest Premier League winning goal on record (since 2006-07). Samba.”

The win left Newcastle United just three points behind Leicester City, who are in ninth place in the Premier League table.
