Bruno Guimaraes and Joelinton discover World Cup fate as Brazil boss Tite names 26-man squad

Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has earned a place in Brazil's 26-man squad for the World Cup but fellow countryman Joelinton has been overlooked by Selecao chief Tite. Guimaraes has been a regular figure for the national side in recent months after flourishing for Eddie Howe's Newcastle in 2022.

The 24-year-old missed Brazil's last two fixtures through injury but was always expected to be called upon for the Qatar showpiece later this month. Brazil boss Tite was on Tyneside last month to get one final look at his potential World Cup stars when Newcastle took on Aston Villa at St James' Park.

Guimaraes was seen dining with him at Brazilian steakhouse Rio just days before the Premier League clash in a big hint he was set to be selected. Joelinton, Philippe Coutinho and Douglas Luiz also featured in the top flight clash, which Newcastle won 4-0.

Joelinton found the net during the victory and put in a fine performance as calls grew for his inclusion. However, the former Hoffenheim forward admitted he faced an uphill battle to gain a late place in the World Cup plans.

"It will be very difficult - a difficult challenge. We just have to think game by game and try to give our best every week," he told Chronicle Live after the game. "There are 20 days to go, I just continue to work hard and do my best and if the chance comes I will be ready."

Brazil rank among the favourites to lift the World Cup next month with a host of Premier League players in their ranks. Manchester United trio Casemiro, Antony and Fred have all earned call-ups, while Arsenal star Gabriel Jesus and Tottenham attacker Richarlison will both be on the plane as well. Former Newcastle transfer target Lucas Paqueta has also earned a spot in the squad.

Other Newcastle stars will discover their World Cup fate later this week. England boss Gareth Southgate is expected to name his squad on Thursday, with Garang Kuol and Sven Botman both eagerly-awaiting the decision of Australia and Netherlands chiefs respectively.
