Bruno Fernandes responds to Liverpool defeat after Gary Neville brands him "disgrace"

Bruno Fernandes has reflected on Manchester United's humiliating defeat at Liverpool after Gary Neville labelled his second-half antics "embarrassing" and a "disgrace".

The Portuguese star stumbled over holding his face after being caught by Ibrahima Konate in the second-half at Anfield. However, replays showed that Fernandes was actually caught in the chest, rather than his head.

Konate went unpunished for the incident as Fernandes managed to get up on his feet without any lasting damage. Some United fans were unhappy with the challenge but neither the referee or VAR felt that it was a red card.

Neville hammered the 28-year-old for his actions as he issued a firm warning to Fernandes as he completely lost his head during the second period. Speaking during commentary for Sky Sports, Neville said: "That’s embarrassing from Bruno Fernandes."

Fernandes was involved in several other incidents, including one where he appeared keen to be substituted. His body language did little to hide his frustration and displeasure as United were hammered. Neville added: "I have to say I think some of his behaviour in the second half has been a disgrace."

Meanwhile, Roy Keane also described Fernandes as a "disgrace" for how he carried himself, although he did reiterate how much of a talent the attacking midfielder is. After being slammed by Keane and Neville, Fernandes spoke to the media following his side's 7-0 defeat on Merseyside.

He told Sky Sports: "We came here with a different mindset before the game. I think the first half was really good for ourselves, we had a lot of chance, we controlled most of the first-half, I think they didn’t create that much.

"But I think obviously the second half was not at our level. We gave too much away, we gave too much time and counters to them and we knew how much of a threat they are with that. Not our level, and we know how much better we can be, how much quality we have. It’s just about now going to the next game and get the result back."

Fernandes added: "I think the team tried to react but in a reactive way. When you go forward and you give so much space to Liverpool, you try to go forward and you try to score goals but we lost a bit of balance, lost a bit of control, our positions on the pitch.

"As I said, we gave too much space away on the pitch and against these kinds of teams who are really strong on the counter, we have to avoid that."

It proved to be a disastrous afternoon for the Red Devils overall as they were battered against their arch rivals. Cody Gakpo gave the Reds the lead on the stroke of half-time in an even first-half on Merseyside.

However, United completely fell apart after the break as Gakpo doubled his tally, while Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah also grabbed a brace for the Reds. Roberto Firmino added gloss on the score line with a seventh as Liverpool secured their biggest-ever win over their rivals.
