Bruno Fernandes explains his goal celebration as Aston Villa star praises Manchester United

Here are your Manchester United morning headlines on Monday, May 1.

Fernandes explains his goal celebration against Villa

Bruno Fernandes has joked that Aston Villa fans must be sick of the sight of him after he netted the winner for Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.

The Portuguese playmaker scored the only goal of the game when he pounced on a spilled shot in the box and fired in from a tight angle to give his side another precious three points. Fernandes, who missed a crucial penalty in the same fixture last season, was goaded by the travelling support throughout the match, but responded in style with an impressive performance.

He got revenge when he scored the goal though, and savoured the moment by celebrating in front of the away end by staring out the Villa fans. Speaking after the game, he was asked about the celebration and the feisty reception he got from the travelling supporters.

"Obviously they probably don't like to play against me, but it is what it is, it's football," he told MUTV. "I'm OK with that. They can enjoy the game in the way they want. I would prefer them to come and support their players instead, rather than to be focused on me. But if they think it's better to be focused on me, than their players, then it is OK. I don't mind at all."

Emi Martinez praises United defence after Aston Villa defeat

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez praised the way Manchester United defended in their win over Unai Emery's side at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag's men secured a 1-0 victory over the Midlands outfit in the Premier League clash, with Bruno Fernandes on target for the home side before the half-time break. The victory saw the Reds strengthen their grip on a top-four place, with United just two points behind third-placed Newcastle with a game in hand.

After the game, Martinez suggested it was "harsh" that Villa had lost the game, but admitted the away side were sloppy in possession and came up against a strong Reds backline. Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw started at centre-back once again, with Diogo Dalot on the right and Tyrell Malacia on the left.

"It's a bit harsh [to lose], we didn't start the game well, we were sloppy and gave the ball away too many times to them," he told Sky Sports. "Our line was good, our spirit was there in the second half but at the end of the day it's zero points that we take back to Birmingham and it's a little bit frustrating."
