Browns Week 1 snap count: Defense only on field for 53 snaps

The Cleveland Browns took care of business on Sunday in their Week 1 matchup with the Carolina Panthers. It wasn’t a beautiful display of football but that should not have been expected given the way the team decided to prepare in preseason games. QB Jacoby Brissett looked off and the secondary had multiple missed coverages that resulted in big plays.

In the end, the record book will show that the Browns are 1-0 to start the year with a chance to go 2-0 against the New York Jets in Week 2.

The positive stories from Week 1 revolve around Nick Chubb, Cade York and Kareem Hunt.

Now a quick look at the team’s snap counts from yesterday and anything interesting we can take from them:

Offense

Jim Dedmon-USA TODAY Sports

A few things stand out when looking at the offense. First, Anthony Schwartz and David Bell were on the field about the same amount. Second, OL Michael Dunn played 11 snaps as the team’s third tight end with newcomer Jesse James getting just five offensive snaps.

Finally, Chubb and Hunt kept each other fresh by basically splitting the carries between the two. Very healthy balance if the team can keep it going all year long.

Defense

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

With their ability to either get quick stops or to give up big plays, Cleveland’s defense wasn’t on the field a ton in Week 1. They should be pretty fresh for Week 2.

The limited snaps also allowed many players to be on the field for 75% or more of the defense’s snaps. Tommy Togiai made an impact on back-to-back plays despite only playing a total of eight snaps.

Rookies Martin Emerson and Alex Wright got a good number of reps in their first game in the NFL and both played well during their time.

Special Teams

Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

A lot of special teams snaps from some key defenders including safeties Grant Delpit and John Johnson III. Interesting to note that DE Chase Winovich didn’t get any snaps on defense after missing so much time with a hamstring injury but was in on seven special teams snaps.

Elevated from the practice squad, LB Jordan Kunszyk joined fellow linebacker Tony Fields II on the field for a majority of the special teams plays. A couple of the backups in the secondary, D’Anthony Bell and Herb Miller, were also on the field for 22 special teams snaps.
