Browns strike a deal with Commanders for K Cade York

One year after being cut by the Cleveland Browns following an abysmal preseason, kicker Cade York has been traded to the Washington Commanders. In return, the Browns will receive a conditional seventh round pick.

This is truly a testament to York and the work that he put in this summer. He came back to the Browns this offseason, signing as a free agent, knowing they already had a kicker in Dustin Hopkins under contract. York knew he did not have a pathway to making the 53-man roster in Cleveland.

However, he came in anyway, worked with special teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone, was perfect this preseason on field goals and extra points, and now will get his shot in the regular season with the Commanders. His career has been off to a rocky start since the Browns took him in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, but he is righting that ship.

The Browns just signed Hopkins to a new contract this offseason as well, so there is not a need for the position to be filled. Look for them to re-sign Lucas Havrisik, who will likely serve as their practice squad kicker.
