Browns QB Deshaun Watson Undergoes Achilles Surgery, Future Uncertain

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson (4) is carted off the field after being injured in the first half of an NFL football game against the Cincinnati Bengals, Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, in Clevelan

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson underwent surgery on Friday to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon, a significant injury that prematurely ended his third season with the team and raises questions about his future in Cleveland.

The Browns have expressed optimism regarding Watson's recovery, stating that they anticipate the 29-year-old quarterback to make a full recovery. Typically, rehabilitation for such injuries can take between 6 to 9 months.

The surgical procedure was conducted by Dr. Bob Anderson, a specialist in foot and ankle injuries, in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Watson sustained the injury during last Sunday's game against the Cincinnati Bengals when his Achilles tendon snapped as he planted his right leg during a draw play.

Expected recovery time for Achilles injury is 6 to 9 months.

Following the injury, some fans' reaction of cheering drew criticism from Watson's teammates, with defensive end Myles Garrett emphasizing the need for better sportsmanship and respect for the game.

Watson's tenure with the Browns has been marred by challenges, including a suspension for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy in 2022 and a previous shoulder injury that limited his playing time last season.

With Watson sidelined, the Browns will turn to backup quarterback Jameis Winston for their upcoming game against the Baltimore Ravens. Winston, who joined the team as a free agent in March, will step in to provide an experienced option at the quarterback position.

In addition to Watson's injury, the Browns will also be without starting left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr., who is sidelined with a knee injury. Coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed that Wills re-injured the same knee he had surgery on in December, further complicating the team's offensive line situation.

To address the lineup changes, the Browns may shift right tackle Dawand Jones to the left side in Wills' absence. The team is also hopeful of regaining right guard Wyatt Teller, a key player in their running game, who has missed the past four games due to a knee injury.

As the Browns navigate these challenges, they are considering their options for the quarterback position, with second-year QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson slated to back up Winston against the Ravens. The team recently signed QB Bailey Zappe from the Kansas City Chiefs' practice squad to bolster their depth at the position.

Despite the setbacks, the Browns remain focused on overcoming adversity and improving their performance as they strive to turn their season around.
