The Cleveland Browns are in the market for a new offensive line coach after the news that Bill Callahan would be leaving to join his son with the Tennessee Titans.
The news did not come as a shock though, as Brian Callahan was named the new head coach of the Tennessee Titans. The rumors had been lingering for a while that Bill would like to coach with his son one day. It was good business on the Browns to let him take advantage of this unique opportunity, and good on the Titans for landing the legendary coach.
Finding his replacement will not be easy, but the Browns made the right business move for every party involved. No position coach has ever been traded in NFL history. It does not matter if he was under contract, the Browns would have been doing him a disservice to force him to remain in Cleveland.
Here is how Browns fans took the news of one of the best offensive line coaches in the business walking out the door.
Losing good coaches is a part of having a good coaching staff.
Bill Callahan was the beginning of the Browns running the ball in dominant fashion.
I will always appreciate the incredible years of that run game with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. 🥺 pic.twitter.com/OkjPmyrKrV

You know, this is one of those times when you need to be happy that we had Bill Callahan in Cleveland as long as we did and equally as happy for him that he can coach under his son. It’s a loss to the team, but man… feels more like a win for everyone.

If the #Browns don’t succeed in ‘24 it won’t be because Bill Callahan went to go coach with his son in Nashville. Relax everybody

How has any NFL team in history gotten good offensive line play without Bill Callahan on its staff?

It doesn't matter what a groundhog sees today. Bill Callahan is gone.

Got Bill Callahan and Dennard Wilson. Hard to ask for a better start. https://t.co/LbNRVYjG3g

Guys. It's his son. Bill Callahan is a 67-year old man. The Browns couldn't just MAKE him stay. Wish him well, and hope his assistant, or whoever they bring in will do well in 2024.

Just because it wasn't patently obvious to *you* that Bill Callahan might/probably would go work with his son in Tennessee does NOT mean that it wasn't obvious to people in the Browns' building who have to plan for things that are obvious. It sucks. He's awesome. Stunner? Nah.

Losing Bill Callahan sucks. There’s really no other way to put it.
Could they find better? Sure. But I doubt it, especially right away. They will feel that loss, and that’s just how it goes sometimes.

.@TonyGrossi says the Browns losing Bill Callahan is like the Browns lost a playoff game 😯 pic.twitter.com/6naVV8XZzZ

Goes without saying: Bill Callahan is a terrific get for the #Titans

Can’t tell folks how big of a move for the Titans to get Bill Callahan. One of the best OL coaches I’ve ever come across. He’ll pay immediate dividends for a position group that really needs all the help it can get #Titans

Fwiw, Scott Peters should be over prepared to take over and the #Browns will be fine without Bill Callahan.
— Brandon Little (@BrandonLittleBL) February 2, 2024
This is the correct take. Bill Callahan is a vital member of the coaching staff but he has a one-in-a-billion opportunity to work alongside his son who just got a one-in-a-million HC job. Good for Bill and good for the Browns for letting him go. Those will be big shoes to fill. https://t.co/cShpTvDRaJ

Look, you can’t replace Callahan. He’s a legend in his specific corner of the profession. His technique teaching will be missed. I do, however, hope the Browns go outside their current staff to hire the next OL coach. Another spot needing some fresh perspective in scheme design.

I remember when the Patriots were getting the 8th pick in the draft from the Falcons for Belichick and people thought the Browns would get a draft pick for an OL coach.

Hey, #Browns. You know who I’d call if I needed an OL coach?
Mike Munchak.
You can thank me later. 🧡🤎
