A £50,000 government grant is to help prepare a disused former council depot site for new housing in Grimsby.
North East Lincolnshire Council has received the cash from the Brownfield Land Release Fund to carry out initial works off Weelsby Avenue, with the potential for 25 new homes identified. The site sits close to the crematorium, directly opposite the entrance to Oasis Academy Wintringham, and just beyond Drew Avenue.
Groundworks will be commissioned in the coming months, and subject to costs coming within budget, initial clearance and remediation works could start soon after. The expectation is it will then be put to market.

Cllr Philip Jackson, leader of NELC, said: “I’m really pleased to see our bid for funding for this site backed by the Government - for the good of the environment, using brownfield sites has to be our preference where we can.
“We continue to work with Homes England on trying to secure the funding for other brownfield sites in the borough.”
It comes as the local authority looks to dispose of both the former Western School site in Grimsby, and a large section of the former Matthew Humberstone school field in Cleethorpes.
