Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe vs Purple Original Mattress: Price & Trial
- Brooklyn Bedding is premium / upper mid-range while Purple is mid-range
- Both MSRP starts at $999 for a twin
- Both mattresses come with a 10-year warranty
While the Purple Original Mattress is mid-range top-rated memory foam mattress, it sits on the higher end of the pricing scale in this bracket. This means it is not so different in price to the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe, even though the latter mattress is a premium to upper mid-range buy. Both mattresses start at $999 for a twin size at all MSRP. However, Brooklyn Bedding run evergreen mattress sales throughout the year, meaning its price often drops below that of the Purple Mattress.
There is currently 25% off a queen size Aurora Luxe at Brooklyn Bedding, bringing the price down to $1,398.75 (was $1,865) without the cloud pillow top, which is an optional extra. That's great value for money on one of our best hybrid mattresses, but not the strongest discount we've seen recently (that was the 30% off deal we saw at the beginning of the month).
Meanwhile, the Purple Mattress is not currently discounted, which means that you'll pay $1,499 for a queen at full MSRP. If you're not in a rush to buy, we would recommend waiting for a Purple mattress sale, which tend to range between $200 and $400 off.
Sales aside, both brands offer generous benefits including a 10-year warranty, 100-night plus sleep trial and free shipping. Delivered in a box, both mattresses make for an easy set up.
Brooklyn Bedding vs Purple: Materials & Design
- Both are hybrid mattresses with specialist cooling technology
- The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is 13" tall
- The Purple Original Mattress is 9.25" tall
The Aurora Luxe is crafted from a combination of coils and foam. Instead of coils, the Purple Original boasts its proprietary GelFlex grid technology, a hyper-elastic polymer grid that’s designed to contour to your body and sleep position.
Standing at 13 inches tall, the Aurora Luxe has a few inches on the Purple Mattress, which is 9.25 inches tall. The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe boasts two layers dedicated to cooling, in addition to a GlacioTex cooling cover. If you opt for the Cloud Pillow-Top upgrade, this encases the foam-stuffed, cushioning pillow top. Otherwise, it sits on top of a layer of CopperFlex foam, which is infused with copper with the aim of boosting temperature regulation further, as well as adding antibacterial properties.
The next two layers are responsible for comfort and pressure relief, and they differ depending on your choice of firmness - there are three to choose from here, a soft, medium-firm and firm. The soft model holds a two-inch, soft memory foam and a one-inch gel swirl memory foam, which are designed to deliver really good sinkage. The medium firm model has two inches of medium memory foam and an inch of gel swirl memory foam, which together provide “just right” comfort – decent sinkage but not too much. If you go for the firm model, there's a 1.5-inch firm memory foam and a 1.5-inch VariFlex transition foam, which deliver a firmer sleep experience. Beneath the foams you'll find a layer of eight-inch, individually encased coils.
Beneath Purple's GelFlex grid layer, you'll find a layer comfort foam for added pressure relief and a durable base for sturdy support. As one of the shallowest mattresses we've tested, it won't have quite a luxurious look and feel as deeper models (we usually recommend a minimum 10-inch mattress for most adults.)
Brooklyn Bedding vs Purple: Comfort & Support
- The Aurora Luxe has three firmness levels to chose from
- The Purple mattress is medium-firm, rated at 7 out of 10
- Both mattresses come highly recommended for those with back pain
In our Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe mattress review, we tested the medium firm mattress and rated it 5 out of 10 for firmness With plenty of sinkage and enough contouring to alleviate pressure points, especially when the Cloud Pillow Top is added, this is a great hybrid for side sleepers.
The Aurora Luxe's supportive premium memory foam protects the spine, making sure it is properly aligned. With a strong combination of support and pressure relief, we rate the Aurora Luxe as one of the best mattresses for back pain. While the medium firm model is best suited to side sleepers, back sleepers would benefit from stepping up the firmness to the firm level to avoid any lumbar sinkage.
On the other hand, the Purple mattress is also very good at contouring the body, supporting the spin and easing joint pain. Our testers in our Purple Mattress review described sleeping on the Purple Original mattress 'like floating on air' – bliss.
As a medium-firm mattress, the Purple Original is great for side sleepers and lightweight back sleepers, but heavier and stomach sleepers will want something firmer, and taller, to adequately support their body type, especially if back pain is keeping you up at night.
Brooklyn Bedding vs Purple: Temperature control
- Both mattresses provide excellent temperature regulation
- The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe boasts more cooling features
- The Purple's GelFlex technology boosts airflow throughout the mattress
Boasting strong temperature regulation properties thanks to the airflow that comes with air channels created by coils and a GelFlex grid, we rate both the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe and Purple mattresses as two of the best cooling mattresses this year.
The Aurora Luxe has a GlacioTex cover that’s designed to be cold to the touch and remove excess heat from the surface of the mattress, delivering reliable cooling. It also has a layer of CopperFlex foam, a dynamic cooling foam, which absorbs excess body heat and releases it back when the sleeper needs a boost of warmth – this mattress really covers all bases in terms of temperature control.
Similarly, the Purple Original’s GelFlex grid layer helps to dissipate heat and boost overall breathability and this, combined with the extremely efficient cooling cover, aids with temperature regulation. In our review, we found the Purple mattress stayed at a cool, comfortable temperature all night long.
The Aurora Luxe slightly trumps the Purple mattress in terms of heat retention as it has additional cooing features, such as its CopperFlex foam layer for enhanced temperature regulation.
