The Denver Broncos were aggressive in free agency last spring, signing defensive lineman Zach Allen ($45.75 million) and offensive linemen Mike McGlinchey ($87.5 million) and Ben Powers ($52 million) to massive contracts.
Following the release of quarterback Russell Wilson, the Broncos are in a salary cap hole and they might not be able to make big splash moves when NFL free agency begins next week.
“We’re going to be strategic,” Denver general manager George Paton said at the NFL combine on Feb. 27. “We’re not going to be as aggressive as last year. We have flexibility, but we’re going to just be more measured and try to fill specific positions and specific needs throughout the team.
“I feel like we’ll have the flexibility to do that, but we can’t do that every year and be aggressive like we were last year.”
The Broncos still have some work to do to get under the salary cap, even after releasing star safety Justin Simmons on Thursday. To climb out of this hole, Denver will need to draft well because Paton can’t buy his way out.
