Broncos’ Russell Wilson ranks among NFL’s top 10 QBs going into Week 5

It’s fair to say the Sean Payton era is off to a good start for Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson.

After the worst season of his career under Nathaniel Hackett in 2022, Wilson has launched a bounce-back campaign under Payton four games into the 2023 season.

Going into Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, Wilson ranks in the top ten in every major passing category among NFL quarterbacks this season. Of note, Wilson’s nine touchdown passes rank second and his 106.7 passer rating ranks third.

  • Passing yards: 1,014 (9th)
  • Completion percentage: 67.4 (7th)
  • Touchdowns: 9 (2nd, tied)
  • Interceptions: 2 (8th-fewest, tied)
  • Passer rating: 106.7 (3rd)
  • Passes beyond 20 yards: 13 (9th)

“He’s on point,” Payton said of Wilson on Wednesday. “He knows exactly, decision-wise, what we’re thinking.

“I can’t think of [any] situations where I’m sitting there looking at the iPad — I look at the pictures still — and wondering why [he made a certain decision]. He’s locked in. He’s playing well.”

If Wilson has another strong performance against a tough Jets defense this weekend, he could propel himself himself into the Comeback Player of the Year conversation one quarter of the way through the 2023 season.
