It’s clear that Courtland Sutton is Russell Wilson’s favorite target.
Wilson and Sutton have connected 53 times for 699 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. Only one player — Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins — has more touchdown catches than Sutton in 2023 (12).
Wilson and Sutton turned heads again on Sunday during the Denver Broncos’ 24-7 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. In the third quarter, Wilson threw a 46-yard touchdown pass that Sutton hauled in with one hand.
Wilson often gives Sutton (6-4, 216 pounds) jump ball opportunities, and more often than not, the big receiver comes down with the ball.
“He’s like that – big, powerful,” coach Sean Payton said of Sutton.” It was a play that was called for [Jerry] Jeudy. The coverage actually went to the field where Jeudy was. If you notice one thing on that play though, I think Russell had seven, eight seconds. We had great protection.
“Obviously, that was the second part of a broken play. There’s a lot of confidence that Russ has in Courtland. It’s earned certainly. He gets the penalty, and he still makes the play. It’s impressive.”
With yet another impressive touchdown catch, Sutton might be on his way to the second Pro Bowl honor of his career. Sutton has scored a touchdown in seven of Denver’s last eight games. He’ll look to keep that trend going when the Broncos face the Detroit Lions on the road in Week 15.
