Broncos prop Payne Haas's mother Joan Taufua remanded over manslaughter charges

The mother of Brisbane Broncos player Payne Haas will remain behind bars on manslaughter charges until March after her lawyer abandoned a bail application in a Gold Coast court today.

Uiatu "Joan" Taufua, 46, is the sole survivor of the crash that killed Susan Zimmer, 70, her partner Chris Fawcett, 79, and Ms Zimmer's daughter Steffanie at Bonogin on December 23 last year.

Ms Taufua was charged with three counts of manslaughter and one count each of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, evading police and driving without a licence.

She was initially under police guard in hospital before being transferred to the Southport Watchhouse last week.

Her matter was mentioned in the Southport Magistrates Court this morning but she did not personally appear.

Ms Taufua's solicitor Leigh Johnson said she would not be continuing with a bail application originally listed and asked for the matter to be adjourned for a committal mention later this year.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Karen Fredericks told the court delays were expected regarding the forensics of the case.

Ms Taufua will remain behind bars until her next court mention on March 9.

Outside court Ms Johnson said her client was doing "as well as can be expected" and recovering from a broken arm and broken shoulder.

"She just misses her family," Ms Johnson said.
