The Denver Broncos fought back and turned in perhaps their best overall performance of the season but fell just short to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, losing 34-28 at home.
Buy Broncos TicketsAfter going down 27-0 early, Denver stormed back with a pair of first-half touchdowns off of defensive turnovers. First, the Broncos scored on an 18-yard Russell Wilson touchdown pass to Jerry Jeudy after a Josey Jewell interception.
That made the score 27-7. Denver then got the ball back again after a Pat Surtain interception, setting up Wilson’s eventual five-yard touchdown pass to Jeudy that made the score 27-14 at halftime.
If not for Wilson’s pick-six earlier in the game, the Broncos could have gone into halftime down trailing by just six points. Instead, the Broncos went into the third quarter trailing by 13 points.
Denver then opened up the second half with Wilson throwing a 66-yard touchdown pass to running back Marlon Mack to make it 27-21.
After the Chiefs scored again to make it 34-21, Wilson was leading another promising drive before leaving the game with a concussion in the fourth quarter. Wilson was replaced by backup QB Brett Rypien, who threw a three-yard touchdown pass to Jeudy to make it 34-28.
Later, Jewell’s second interception of the game gave the Broncos the ball back trailing by six with 5:49 remaining in the contest, but Rypien gave it right back to KC with an interception of his own.
The Chiefs were then able to run out the clock, securing a win that improved them to 10-3 and dropped Denver to 3-10. The Broncos were eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.
In addition to losing Wilson, Denver also lost running back Mike Boone, who was carted off the field with an ankle injury in the first half.
Up next for the Broncos is a home game against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 15. Wilson’s status will be the storyline of the week going into that game.
