Broncos Assistant Coach Mike Westhoff Resigns Due To Vision Issues

Broncos Assistant Coach Mike Westhoff

Denver Broncos assistant head coach Mike Westhoff, a former special teams coordinator with the New York Jets and New Orleans Saints, has announced his resignation at the age of 76 due to issues with his vision. Westhoff had come out of retirement to join head coach Sean Payton's staff in Denver in 2023.

Last week, Westhoff experienced vision problems, prompting him to consult with doctors. Following medical advice, he made the difficult decision to prioritize his health and step down from his coaching role.

In a statement provided by the Broncos, Westhoff expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to the team and praised the Broncos' strong foundation and winning culture. He wished the organization continued success moving forward.

During Westhoff's tenure alongside special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica, the Broncos have boasted one of the league's top special teams units since 2023. This season, the team has excelled in pinning opponents deep in their territory, with 21 punts landing inside the 20-yard line, including four near the goal line.

However, Westhoff's resignation comes at a challenging time for the Broncos, who recently suffered a heartbreaking 16-14 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs after a blocked field goal attempt as time expired.

Westhoff's departure leaves a void in the coaching staff, but the Broncos remain focused on maintaining their positive trajectory and success on the field. The team will continue to build on its strong foundation and winning culture as they navigate the remainder of the season.
