Aethelwulf started the Newcastle Cup as $1.20 favourite.
By the end of the 2300 metres, the four-year-old gelding had showed exactly why.
More than just a fifth win from seven career starts, and fourth straight since July 16, it was the ease at which Aethelwulf performed in the group 3 at Broadmeadow on Friday.
He made a move at the 1000m mark and was simply never headed, pulling away to salute by 2.47 lengths from $101 shot Steel Blaze. Third place was Bella Montagna.
"Never really got out of second gear" and "class of his own" were the comments from Thoroughbred Central callers, via Racing NSW.
During a post-race interview Warwick Farm trainer Matthew Smith praised the effort.
"He's unbelievable really," Smith said.
"You work him with a class one horse at home and he just lobs along beside them and doesn't really give you any feeling of what's in the tank. Until he gets to the races and it really comes out. It's nice to have a horse that surprises you like that."
Zac Lloyd was the successful jockey.
"He's been confident all the time, ever since the first time he sat on him," Smith said.
"He's raved about the horse and he's really excited about him. Also rode him with confidence today. A good ride."
In terms of what's next for Aethelwulf, Smith reckons either a Bart Cummings of Metropolitan.
Newcastle's Friday program saw Perfumist, already en route to the Big Dance, take out the group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) for the Bjorn Baker stables.
Fully Lit, prepared by Gait Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, went coast to coast and claimed the later group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m).

But come Friday, for the first time since arriving at the stables of local trainer Kris Lees a little over two years ago, Irish import Changingoftheguard will step up to compete in familiar surroundings.
The eight-year-old gelding starts as topweight for the group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup (2300 metres) in 2026, not only eyeing off hometown silverware but also building towards a Melbourne Cup return at Flemington in under two months.
Stable spokesperson Danny Greer says this same path has been tread before, successfully nonetheless by Green Moon.
"It's probably a path many have taken in the past," Greer told the Newcastle Herald.
"A horse like Green Moon won the race here [Newcastle Cup, 2011] and went onto win a Melbourne Cup [2012].
"A lot of Kris' stayers are the same at this point of their preparations, whether they start at a Wyong Cup then a Newcastle Cup then onto the Metro and beyond.
"It's a path similarly taken by most, trained in this area anyway."
Changingoftheguard, resuming in last month's group 3 Premier Cup (2000m) at Randwick, has drawn barrier six and carries 59.5 kilograms with Tim Clark on board.
"He's the type of horse that takes a few runs to get to his best, but all his work has been good and we expect him to run well in the Newcastle Cup," Greer said.
"He ran in the Premier Cup [down in Sydney] and Friday will be a month since then.
"It was over 2000m and we'll start gradually building up in distance, including the Newcastle Cup and beyond that."
A next up option could be The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick on October 3 while there's also a nomination for the Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 17.
Changingoftheguard, largely owned by Lloyd Williams, joined a group 1 honour roll with Sydney Cup (3200m) victory in the autumn.
But it was last year's effort that has Lees and co. eyeing off another crack over the famed two miles at Flemington.
"His run was full of merit last year in the Melbourne Cup," Greer said.
"Drew the car park out in 24, but was there for the most part and earned a good cheque for connections.
"We were confident going into the autumn that he'd produce similar performances and we were very pleased with what he did.
"So we've got plenty of confidence going into those types of races again this time of year."
Changingoftheguard was weighted at 56.5kg for the Melbourne Cup when numbers officially dropped in Victoria on Thursday.
Defiantly (56.5kg) and Wine Dark Sea (56kg), a duo connected with Hunter-based syndicators Australian Bloodstock, were around the same mark for November 3 while defending champion Half Yours came in at 59kg.
Back closer to home and Lees also has Age of Sail, ridden by Tom Sherry out of barrier eight, in the Newcastle Cup on Friday.
Matthew Smith's Aethelwulf, priced $1.50, was the TAB fixed-odds favourite on race eve while Hunter jockey Dylan Gibbons will steer Ciaron Maher's Amplify.
Either side of Broadmeadow's main event will be the group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) and group 3 Cameron Handicap (1500m), with the latter also offering Big Dance eligibility.
Lees has one in each, Infancy and Tavi Time respectively.
Nathan Doyle, a fellow Newcastle trainer, saddles up Churchill's Choice in the Tibbie Stakes while Matcha Latte makes a Cameron Handicap return trying to improve upon second place in 2024.
Paul Perry, long-time Novocastrian reinsman and fresh from notching up a 4000th career salute, looks set to have Princess Cruizer, Rothrock and Uncle Harry running across the program on September18.
Action gets underway 1pm.

The $300,000 Sharp Office Newcastle Gold Cup (2300m), the $250,000 Newcastle Car & Truck Rental Cameron Handicap (1500m) and the $250,000 NZB Tibbie Stakes (1400m).
The rising star of the Sydney stayers ranks Aethelwulf, to be ridden by Zac Lloyd, is an odds-on favourite in the Newcastle Gold Cup following three successive victories in inferior company at Kembla, Canterbury and Rosehill.
Following acceptances on Wednesday, TAB's fixed odds market listed Aethelwulf as the $1.50 favourite ahead of the inform So You Are ($3.40).
A son of the Japanese sire Saxon Warrior, Aethelwulf has won four from six and he won his first race start, which was at Newcastle, by 5.17 lengths in June.
Roger White is part owner, represented Australia in the Winter Olympics in Norway in 1994 and a former Novocastrian.
The promising stayer is also the $3.50 favourite for the group 2 Metropolitan at Randwick on October 3.
He has been nominated for the Melbourne Cup and is currently a $34 chance.
The second favourite So You Are is in career-best form and after a close second in the Premier Cup at Randwick on August 22, was an easy last-start winner of the Tatts Cup at the same track on September 5.
Until his last two starts with Bjorn Baker, he was trained at Armidale by Sterling Osland and finished a close second in the Caloundra Cup and fourth in the Grafton Cup.
Bella Montagna has a place chance.
The Cameron Handicap has attracted a very smart field.
The Kris Lees stable has booked Jason Collett to ride the classy Tavi Time.
The latter hasn't raced since May but has had two recent trials and his last at Gosford was impressive.
His stablemate Rivellino led all the way with Tavi Time finishing strongly to go down by a head unextended.
He has won a Randwick Summer Cup and a Scone Cup and his record stands at 10 wins from 32 starts.
Tavi Time has won two from four at Newcastle and holds a very good fresh record.
Fully Lit is an on-speed gelding from the Waterhouse-Bott stable and he finished third, 1.82 lengths behind Headly Grange in last year's Cameron Handicap.
October saw him runner-up behind Autumn Glow in the Epsom Handicap.
He hasn't been far away in two starts this preparation.
Vivy Air from the Ciaron Maher stable has won more than $3million in prizemoney and is first up after two recent trials.
The mare won the $2million Five Diamonds at Rosehill in November and in March this year finished third, 0.62 of a length behind Lazzura in the group 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill.
Mr. Miller and Althoff also have accepted in the Cameron.
The Tibbie Stakes has attracted a quality field of fillies and mares.
The two local mares, Churchill's Choice and Infancy, will be well fancied and have undeniable prospects.
Churchill's Choice, from the in-form Nathan Doyle stable, resumes after a number of outstanding performances last preparation.
She won the group 3 Hawkesbury Cup in May and was runner-up in the group 3 Newcastle Stakes in March, the Scone Cup in May and Eagle Farm National Classic in June.
The mare has a terrific finishing burst and races well on the home track.
Infancy was very unlucky when flashing home to miss by less than a length in the group 3 Show County at Randwick on August 22.
Polymnia was placed twice in group 3 events during the Autumn.
