Internet service provider Truespeed has made a £6m investment to “significantly” expand its full-fibre network in Bath.
The firm employs more than 250 people in the city, where it has its head office and customer service centre. Truespeed said its latest outlay brought its total investment in its Somerset home to £11m.
With the additional funding, the company said its service would be rolled-out to a further 21,000 properties in Batheaston, Bathampton and Bathford, alongside notable landmarks such as Pulteney Road and Henrietta Park.
Truespeed has already connected more than 60,000 South West households and 300 businesses, with Thatchers Cider, yoghurt brand Yeo Valley and ready-meal retailer Charlie Bigham’s among its clients.
Chief executive James Lowther said: “Since we started eight years ago, we’ve been bringing ultrafast broadband to rural, semi urban and suburban areas across the South West. To now expand our coverage in our home city of Bath marks a key milestone for the company.
“With our headquarters and team based here, investing in our own streets to support the city with the benefits of full fibre is a true privilege. We’re also proud to be increasing employment, supporting economic growth and enabling innovation across the city.”
Truespeed said it would work with Bath and North East Somerset Council to keep residents updated on potential temporary roadworks or cabling, as its engineers connect streets and homes to the full fibre network, with Mr Lowther saying there could be “some initial disruption”.
Truespeed secured a £100m investment from Aviva Investors at the start of last year to support its network build across rural, semi urban and suburban areas in the South West.
The company recently appointed Robert Purdy, a former IT boss at telecoms giant BT, to spearhead a “transformation” of its internal systems.
