Broad daylight disorder broke out on a seaside street as families flocked to the coast to enjoy the sunny weather.
Police were called to Station Road in Cullercoats after a disturbance broke out at around 4pm on Saturday.
The Chronicle understands local residents reported seeing a group of youths chasing others with what looked like pieces of wood.
Police say no one was injured in the incident.
And officers are now appealing for witnesses.
A Northumbria Police spokesman said: “Shortly after 4pm on Saturday, we received a report of a disturbance on Station Road, in Cullercoats, involving a group of youths.
“Officers attended and no-one was found to have suffered serious injuries."
