Britons connected to cruise ship outbreak of hantavirus to complete isolation in UK

  • Ten British individuals from South Atlantic islands, linked to a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship, are being brought to the UK for precautionary self-isolation.
  • The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed this measure ensures access to specialist medical services in England, as the individuals are currently asymptomatic.
  • This development follows 20 British nationals and other passengers from the MV Hondius cruise ship completing an initial isolation at Arrowe Park Hospital, with many now continuing their 42-day isolation at home.
  • The cruise outbreak has led to 11 reported hantavirus cases, including three deaths, though the World Health Organisation (WHO) sees no sign of a larger outbreak yet.
  • The WHO praised Spain for allowing the ship to dock, highlighting the humanitarian necessity to disembark passengers, some of whom were experiencing mental distress.
