Briton killed by ‘stray bullet’ amid Kashmir protests

  • A British national, Mohammad Akhtar, was killed on 9 June after being struck by a “stray bullet” during violent clashes in Pakistan-administered Kashmir .
  • Another Briton , Waqas Arif, has reportedly been detained without charge for more than two months in Mirpur, although his family maintains he did not participate in protests .
  • The unrest, led by the now-banned Joint Awami Action Committee over legislative representation, has left at least 34 civilians and six security personnel dead.
  • The UK Foreign Office expressed deep concern over the situation, saying it had raised the issue directly with Pakistani authorities and updated travel advice for the region.
  • The regional elections concluded on Monday despite protest boycotts, with the ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N party securing a majority.
