Britney Spears’ representative has acknowledged that the singer’s life requires “long overdue change” after her California arrest for allegedly driving under the influence.
The Grammy-winning pop star, 44, who has had several public spirals in recent years, was pulled over Wednesday night by California Highway Patrol officers, according to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office’s inmate records. She was booked by the sheriff’s office before being released from custody hours later.
In the first statement shared since her arrest, Spears’ representative told The Independent that the singer would be receiving the “help and support she needs” during this period.
“This was an unfortunate incident that is completely inexcusable,” the statement began.
“Britney is going to take the right steps and comply with the law and hopefully this can be the first step in long overdue change that needs to occur in Britney’s life.

“Hopefully, she can get the help and support she needs during this difficult time.
“Her boys are going to be spending time with her. Her loved ones are going to come up with an overdue needed plan to set her up for success for well-being,” the statement concluded.
The 911 dispatch audio obtained by US Weekly reveals that Spears was driving a black BMW 2026 convertible, with the operator describing the vehicle “erratic[ly] braking, swerving and driving with no taillight.”
In recent years, the Grammy-winning singer has found herself at the center of a string of controversies, including erratic social media behavior, causing fans to raise concerns over her well-being.
Spears — who appears to have deleted her Instagram profile following her arrest — faced legal trouble in 2007 when she allegedly hit a parked car in Los Angeles, resulting in four misdemeanor charges and a jail sentence.
The charges were later dropped and Spears avoided jail time after a jury acquitted her of driving without a California license.
During that period, Spears lost custody of her two sons with her ex-husband Kevin Federline: 20-year-old Sean Preston Federline and 19-year-old Jayden James Federline. She was estranged from her sons for some time, but reunited with Jayden around Christmas 2024.

Spears spent nearly 14 years under a conservatorship that put her father, Jamie Spears, in control of her career, finances and personal life. The controversial legal arrangement came to an end in November 2021 after 13 years, following the long-running #FreeBritney movement led by her fans across the world.
Last month, Spears sold the right to her entire music catalog, which includes hits including “Toxic,” “Baby One More Time” and “Gimme More,” for a sum estimated to be $200 million.
In her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me, which largely discussed her personal struggles with being in the spotlight, Spears recounted how the conservatorship impacted her life, saying that it “stripped me of my womanhood [and] made me into a child.”
Spears has been at the forefront of pop music and popular culture for nearly two decades, having sold tens of millions of albums, scored five No. 1 hits on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart. She has released nine studio albums since her 1999 debut and is one of the best-selling female artists of all time.
The singer has withdrawn from the music industry in recent years and has not released an album since 2016’s Glory. In January, she vowed to never perform in the U.S. again due to “extremely sensitive reasons,” but teased possible performances in the UK and Australia.
“I hope to be sitting on a stool with a red rose in my hair, in a bun, performing with my son… in the UK and AUSTRALIA very soon,” she said in an Instagram post. “He’s a huge star and I’m so humbled to be in his presence!!! God speed, little man!!!”
