The body of a British woman has been found on a popular tourist beach in the Indian state of Goa.
According to reports, a group of locals found the woman's body against the wall of a church in the tourist hotspot of Agonda, Canacona, at 8pm on Tuesday.
The locals called police and the body was sent to the hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Abhishek Dhania, South Goa’s police superintendent, said: “We have registered a case of unnatural death. Inquest proceedings are in process.”
The woman is said to have been a frequent visitor to the south-western coastal state over the past decade.
Police do not believe there to have been foul play in the woman’s death. Some reports have suggested the woman was attempting to climb a wall when she fell and broke a collarbone.
A senior police official said: ”Her friends do not suspect foul play.”
The woman is said to have been living in a rented home in Agonda at the time of her death.
Brits are among the nationalities most likely to visit Goa from overseas for tourism, according to the state’s tourism data, attracted by its sunny beaches and relatively cheap hotels.
